The Light of the Beast - Pablo Allison

The Light of the Beast is the culmination of almost 4 years of documentation of migrants travelling from Central America to the United States of America. British/Mexican artist Pablo Allison started immersing himself in and photographing the topic of migration in 2017 with the sole purpose of understanding more about life and its intricacies. What started as a series of journeys without a clear destination turned into the documentation of people escaping extreme violence and poverty.

Allison’s photographic work on the Beast (the freight train commonly known to migrants that carries goods between Mexico, the USA and Canada) has put him in difficult situations which migrants face every day when crossing through Mexico in order to reach the United States.

In 2018 he was intercepted by armed freight train criminals who robbed him at gunpoint. In 2019 he was detained and imprisoned by ICE agents for almost a month. While he was imprisoned, he was able to extend his documentation about the topic and understand the situation at first hand.

The Light of the Beast contains an essay by the artist, words by Guatemalan migrant and activist David Vazquez and an afterword by Mexican Human Rights activist Claudia S. Leon.
